Howa Hunter - out of the box accuracy and versatility.

We recently had an opportunity to assist a farmer with some pest control. We chose to field test some of our more popular gear with a view to seeing what it takes to get a new hunter up and running.

We chose:

Zeroing

The initial zeroing of the DNT Therm night is reasonably straighforward once you get your head around the process. You'll need an aiming mark, which needs heat for the thermal, with a background. Fire at the target and in the menu freeze the picture while aiming at the centre, then move the crosshairs in the menu to the bullet impact point. Re-centre and fire again, you will be on target. Do the same for both the thermal and day/night sight.

We then fed in the ballistic data into the DNT app and synced it. After that, each time you use the laser range finder (LRF) you will see the "come up" for the relevant distance showing in your reticle. Windage is for you to estimate. Different reticle styles in the DNT allow you to manage your hold off points.

We shot the Howa rifle after a basic clean, and it held zero and a good group from that point onwards.

Setup

Combining the Southern Cross Small Arms (SCSA) TSP-H chassis with the Howa allowed us to use the Scree bipod on the ARCA rail, or bipod, or offhand.

Using a light but rigid tripod like the Scree makes a huge difference. The ball head allows you a very simple way to to scan and lock into a position.

Optics

Targeting and aiming has come a long way. The combination of a day/night camera with a thermal is a massive leap forward. The picture clarity on teh 5-25 day sight is exceptional (it uses the Sony chip). Shooting iverlw light was like shooting in daylight and that was without the inclouded infrared illuminator.

Switching between thermal and day/night was simple and using the two together - find and then confirm - was too easy.

The DNT Thermnight is revolutionary and worth every cent of it's modest price.

Overall impression

Combining thermal with a tripod is a game changer. Add in an accurate rifle and ammo and your weekend is set! We truly recommend this gear, tried and tested!
