Storage requirements are set by your state and the safe must match the highest category you hold, not the gun you are buying today. As a general guide, Category A and B storage requires a steel receptacle of specified thickness, bolted to the structure of the building, with a sturdy lock. Category C, D and H attract stricter construction and locking requirements, and ammunition must be stored in a separate locked container. Your local firearms registry or licensing officer is the authority on what will pass inspection at your address.
Buy larger than you need now. Almost everyone outgrows their first safe, and a bigger cabinet costs far less than a second one plus a second installation. If the receptacle weighs less than 150 kg when empty it must be fixed to the premises so it cannot be easily removed. Ammunition must be kept in a separate locked container. What safe do I need for a pistol (Category H) in NSW?
Category H, C and D firearms must be stored in a locked steel safe of a type approved by the Commissioner of Police that cannot easily be penetrated, and the safe must be bolted to the structure of the building. Does a gun safe have to be bolted to the floor or wall in NSW?
For Category C, D and H firearms, yes, the safe must be bolted to the structure of the premises. For Category A and B, a receptacle under 150 kg empty must be fixed to prevent easy removal, which in practice means bolting it to a wall stud or concrete floor. We recommend bolting every safe regardless of category; a storage inspection is now required before a Permit to Acquire is issued in NSW.

Only if the safe has a separate lockable compartment. NSW regulations require ammunition to be stored in a locked container that is kept separate from the receptacle or safe holding the firearms. Several Lokaway models include an internal locking ammunition box that satisfies this; otherwise a separate ammunition safe or locked steel box is needed.
