Lever-action rifles remain Category A (rimfire) and Category B (centrefire) in NSW under the 2026 reforms, which moved straight-pull, pump-action and lever-release rifles to Category C but left true lever actions where they were. A Permit to Acquire and compliant storage are required. Popular calibres are .22 LR for rabbits and plinking, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum for pigs and deer in scrub, .30-30 Win for the classic deer carbine, .45-70 Government for buffalo and sambar, and .44-40 and .45 Colt for western action matches.
