Every first-time firearms licence applicant in NSW must pass a safety training course approved by the NSW Police Firearms Registry. Magnum Sports is an accredited NSW DPIRD Hunter LEAP Provider and runs the Firearms & Hunting Safety (Long-arms) Course, approved by the Firearms Registry and delivered by our Registry-approved instructor.

Where and when

Sessions run at Magnum Sports, 19 Babbage Road, Roseville Chase, by appointment: Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 9 am to 2 pm. Choose your preferred start when you book and we confirm your date and time by phone or email within one business day. Allow up to five hours if you are new to firearms, less if you have handled them before.

Who it is for

• Adults applying for a first NSW firearms licence in categories A and B: rimfire and centrefire rifles, shotguns and air rifles.
• Young people aged 12 to 17 applying for a minor's firearms permit, with a parent or guardian present.

How it works

1. Book a seat. Choose your preferred start at checkout. Your order confirmation carries your study link, the P650 declaration form and the venue details, and we confirm your date within one business day.
2. Study and take the online pre-test. Work through the DPI course booklet, then sit our 30-question practice test as many times as you like. It mirrors the format of the real assessment.
3. Session day. Photo ID and P650 check, then the closed-book theory test (30 questions, pass mark 25; minors sit 10 questions with a pass mark of 7), then the practical handling assessment one-on-one with the instructor.
4. Certificate. Pass both parts and you receive your Certificate of Firearms Safety Awareness. Lodge it with your licence application to the Firearms Registry.

What you need

• Government photo ID such as a driver licence or passport. For minors, the parent or guardian's photo ID plus the minor's birth certificate or photo ID.
• A completed P650 declaration, signed in front of the instructor on the day. If you answer yes to any question in Section B you need a permit from the Firearms Registry before you can attend. See the course FAQ.
