Buying Thermal Rifle Scopes in Australia

A thermal scope shows heat rather than light, so it picks up animals in total darkness and through light cover.

Entry scopes start at $1,599 (HikMicro NEOS NE25) and $1,999 (ATN ThOR 6 Mini). The middle of the range, around $3,000 to $4,300, covers the Nocpix Bolt L35R, HikMicro Stellar SH35L 3.0 and Pulsar Trail 3 LRF XQ50, with rangefinding flagships such as the Pulsar Telos LRF XT50 and Nocpix Ace S60R above $6,900.

Sensor resolution and lens size decide identification range. A 384 sensor with a 35 mm lens suits most pig and fox shooting inside 300 metres; step to a 640 sensor and 50 mm lens for open country. Built-in rangefinders and ballistic reticles add cost but take the guesswork out of holdover at night.

      Common questions

      Do I need a licence to buy a thermal rifle scope?
      No. Thermal scopes are not licensed items in Australia. The rifle you fit it to must be licensed and registered as usual.
      What is a good first thermal scope for pigs and foxes?
      A 35 mm scope with a 384 sensor, such as the Nocpix Bolt L35R or HikMicro Stellar SH35L 3.0, covers most farm work. If budget is tight the HikMicro NEOS NE25 at $1,599 suits close-range shooting.
      Do you ship thermal scopes?
      Yes. Thermal optics are shipped Australia-wide, or you can collect from our Roseville Chase store and have us help with mounting.
      Should I buy a thermal scope or a thermal monocular first?
      Many shooters start with a handheld monocular for spotting, then add a scope. If you already know you will shoot at night regularly, a scope with a rangefinder does both jobs from the rifle.
