      Buying Optics in Australia

      Magnum Sports is one of Sydney's largest optics dealers, with around 400 optics listed here and 180 available today: thermal and night vision (190 lines), binoculars and rangefinders (110) and rifle scopes (100). Leupold (60 lines), Bushnell (50), Pulsar (47), HikMicro (40), Guide (33), Swarovski (21), Zeiss, RIX, NOCPIX, Vortex, Tasco, PARD, ATN and GPO make up the range, and every optic can be compared side by side in our Roseville Chase store.

      Entry-level scopes and binoculars start at about $270, a quarter of the range is under $1,400, the median optic is about $2,500 and flagship thermal scopes and Swarovski or Zeiss glass run to $10,000. No licence is needed to buy any optic in Australia, and everything ships Australia-wide for a flat $20 (free over $700).

      For a hunting rifle we usually suggest a 3-9x or 3-12x scope with a 40 to 50mm objective; for foxes and pigs at night a thermal scope or clip-on; for glassing goats and deer a 10x42 binocular and a laser rangefinder. Bring your rifle in and we will mount, level and bore-sight the scope for you.

      Common questions

      Do I need a licence to buy a rifle scope or thermal optic in Australia?
      No. Rifle scopes, thermal scopes, night vision, binoculars and rangefinders are unrestricted in every Australian state and can be posted to any address. Only the firearm they are fitted to needs a licence.
      What magnification rifle scope do I need for hunting in Australia?
      A 3-9x40 or 3-12x50 covers most bush and paddock hunting out to 300 metres. For long-range or open-country shooting choose 4-16x or 5-25x with a 50mm objective, and for rimfire and close-range pig hunting a 1-6x or 2-7x is faster to use.
      Which optics brands does Magnum Sports stock?

      Yes. We mount, level and bore-sight scopes in store at Roseville Chase, usually while you wait, and can recommend rings and bases for your rifle. Final zeroing is done by you at the range.
      Do you ship optics Australia-wide?
      Yes, for a flat $20 with free delivery on orders over $700 and express options available. Every optic carries the Australian distributor's warranty, so grey-import warranty problems do not apply.
