Firearms Safety Course FAQ
Do I need a licence to attend?
No. The P650 declaration lets an unlicensed person handle firearms for the duration of an approved safety course under the instructor's supervision.
I answered yes to a question in Section B of the P650. Can I still come?
Not yet. Apply to the Firearms Registry for a permit to undertake a firearms safety training course first. Applications are checked by police and refused where a licence would be refused. Bring the permit to your session. If you ticked yes by mistake, complete a fresh form.
How long does it take?
Allow four to five hours if you are new to firearms. Experienced shooters often finish in one to two hours.
What if I fail the theory test?
You cannot proceed to the practical. Re-read the sections listed in your pre-test review and book a later session. Contact us about re-sit arrangements.
What do I get at the end?
A Certificate of Firearms Safety Awareness. Lodge it with your firearms licence application to the NSW Police Firearms Registry. The certificate is issued by our approved instructor, and it is an offence to obtain or issue one dishonestly.
What happens after the course?
- Apply for your licence with the Firearms Registry, attaching the certificate and evidence of your genuine reason, for example a hunting club membership, a NSW Game Hunting Licence, a target club membership or primary production.
- There is a statutory 28-day waiting period on a first licence.
- Once licensed, apply for a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for your first firearm. The first PTA in each category also carries a 28-day wait. We handle PTA paperwork in store.
Can I buy a rifle on the day?
No. You need a licence and a PTA first. What you can do on the day is sort out your safe and storage, hearing and eye protection, cleaning gear and clothing, and we will help you plan the first firearm so the PTA goes in the moment your licence arrives.
Is this the R-Licence?
No. The R-Licence for public land hunting needs a separate DPIRD accreditation course, which can be completed online, plus membership of an approved hunting organisation. This course covers the firearms licence requirement.
Does this course cover pistols?
No. Category H applicants complete a pistol safety course through an approved pistol club.
My child is 14. Can they do the course?
Yes. Applicants aged 12 to 17 can sit the course for a minor's firearms permit with a parent or guardian present. Minors sit a 10-question theory test with a pass mark of 7 and complete the same practical.
