      Buying Bolt Action Rifles in Australia

      Magnum Sports lists more than 400 bolt-action rifles that can be ordered today from Tikka, Sako, Savage, Ruger, Lithgow Arms, Bergara, Sauer, Blaser, CZ, Howa, Anschutz, Cadex, Springfield Armory, Weatherby and Winchester, covering rimfire trainers and hunters, lightweight and walnut-stocked centrefire hunting rifles, varmint and long-range rifles, and chassis rifles for PRS and F-Class.

      Bolt actions are the standard for hunting and pest control because they are simple, accurate and easy to keep. In NSW rimfire bolt actions are Category A and centrefire bolt actions Category B. Every firearm purchase in NSW needs a current licence in the right category and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for that firearm; since 1 July 2026 a safe-storage inspection must be passed before a PTA is issued, and licences now run for a maximum of two years.       Rimfire bolt actions start at about $400, most centrefire hunting rifles sit between $1,200 and $3,500, and precision rifles from Sako, Cadex, Victrix and Accuracy International run from $5,000 to more than $20,000.

      Pick the calibre for the job first (.22 LR or .17 HMR for small pests, .223 for foxes and goats, .243 to .308 for deer and pigs, 6.5 Creedmoor for long-range), then the rifle. We can fit and bore-sight a scope and supply ammunition for collection in store.

      What is the best bolt-action rifle for hunting in Australia?
      For most hunters a Tikka T3x, Sako 90, Savage 110, Ruger American, Howa 1500 or Bergara B-14 in .243, .270, 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 covers deer, pigs and goats. Tikka and Howa give the best value under $1,500; Sako and Sauer are the step up in fit and finish.
      Are bolt-action rifles Category A or B in NSW?
      Rimfire bolt actions (.22 LR, .17 HMR, .22 WMR) are Category A. Centrefire bolt actions are Category B. Each purchase needs a Permit to Acquire and, since 1 July 2026, a passed safe-storage inspection.

      Yes, dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer once your PTA is issued; longarm transfer freight is $65 ($85 to WA). Ammunition is collected in store only.
