How do I transport a rifle legally in NSW?
The firearm must be unloaded, out of sight and secured so it cannot be easily taken, with ammunition stored separately, and you must be licensed for it. A padded soft case or a lockable hard case in the boot or behind the seat meets the requirement for road travel; do not leave firearms unattended in a vehicle.
What gun case do I need to fly with a firearm in Australia?
Airlines require the firearm unloaded in a locked, hard-sided case checked as baggage, with ammunition packed separately in its original packaging within the airline's weight limit, and you must declare it at check-in. What size case fits a scoped rifle?
Measure from muzzle to butt with the scope fitted and add about 50 mm, and allow for the objective bell and any bipod: most scoped hunting rifles fit a 48 inch (122 cm) case, long-barrelled or muzzle-braked rifles need 52 to 54 inches, and a double rifle case such as the Pelican V800 has 53 inches internal.
