      Buying .308 Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists more than 450 rifles chambered in .308 Winchester, with around 245 available today: bolt-action hunting rifles from Tikka, Sako, Savage, Bergara, Ruger, Weatherby, Browning, Franchi, Benelli and Arttech, straight-pull Blaser R8s, precision and chassis rifles from Victrix, Tikka TAC A1 and Sako TRG, plus lever actions and pre-owned .308s. Tikka, Savage, Sako and Bergara are the deepest ranges.

In NSW a bolt-action, straight-pull or lever-action .308 is a Category B firearm (straight-pull and pump-action rifles moved to Category C under the 2026 reforms), and needs a Permit to Acquire and an inspected safe before the permit issues. The Winchester SXR2 and other semi-automatic .308s are Category D and are limited to primary producers and professional shooters.

The .308 Win is the do-everything Australian hunting calibre: enough for sambar, red deer, scrub bulls and big pigs with 150 to 180 grain loads, mild enough for goats and fallow with 130 grain loads, and ammunition is on every gun shop shelf. Prices start at $787 for an entry package, most hunting rifles sit between $1,200 and $2,700, a Sako 90 is about $3,800 and precision rifles run to $22,500.

      Common questions

Is a .308 a good all-round hunting rifle in Australia?
Yes. The .308 Winchester handles everything from goats and fallow deer to sambar, red deer and large pigs, ammunition is stocked everywhere, and recoil is manageable in a 3.5 kg sporter. If you only want one centrefire, .308 is the safe choice; if you mainly shoot foxes and goats a .223 or .243 is lighter, and 6.5 Creedmoor gives flatter trajectories at long range with less recoil.
What licence do I need for a .308 rifle in NSW?
A bolt-action, straight-pull or lever-action .308 is a Category B firearm in NSW, so you need a Category B licence with a genuine reason such as recreational hunting or primary production, plus a Permit to Acquire for each rifle. Since the 2026 reforms your safe storage is inspected before the permit issues, and straight-pull and pump-action rifles are now Category C. Semi-automatic .308s are Category D.
How much does a .308 rifle cost?
An entry .308 package such as an Arttech Prima XP or Franchi Horizon is $780 to $1,150, a Ruger American Gen II is about $1,190, a Tikka T3x Lite starts around $1,980, a Sako 90 Hunter is $3,799 and precision rifles from Victrix or Tikka TAC A1 run from $3,000 to $22,500. Budget $300 to $1,500 for a scope and from $559 for a safe.
Which .308 rifles are in stock at Magnum Sports?
