Our complete air gun range — both air rifles and air pistols, in .177, .22, .25 and .30.

If you are after an air rifle specifically, air rifles is the page you want — it excludes air pistols, which are a different product with a different licence pathway entirely.

In NSW both are firearms under section 4 of the Firearms Act. The difference that matters: an air rifle is almost always Category A, the broadest licence category, while an air pistol is Category H, which requires club membership, a probationary period and participation records. They are not interchangeable purchases and the Category H pathway takes considerably longer.

Either way you need the licence and a Permit to Acquire for the specific firearm, and since 1 July 2026 a safe storage inspection sits in front of every permit. Airgun pellets are legally ammunition in NSW and are collection only from our Roseville Chase store — we do not ship ammunition of any kind.

Buying Air Rifles & Pistols in Australia

Magnum Sports stocks more than 140 air rifles and air pistols, from $337 spring and gas-ram rifles for rabbits and pest birds to $6,759 pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) rifles for field target, benchrest and long-range pest control. Brands include FX Airguns (Impact, Panthera, King, DRS), Airmaks, Kalibrgun, Evanix and Airgun Technology in PCP; Diana, Norica, Stoeger and Gamo in spring and gas-ram; and Pardini, Walther and Hammerli match air pistols for ISSF 10-metre shooting.

Air rifles are firearms in every Australian state and territory and need a licence; in NSW an air rifle is a Category A firearm, registered like any other, requiring a Permit to Acquire and compliant storage. Air pistols are Category H and need a pistol club licence. There is no unlicensed 'BB gun' category in Australia.

A spring or gas-ram rifle in .177 or .22 ($337 to $700) is enough for rabbits, rats and pigeons to 40 metres with no extra gear. A PCP ($1,600 to $6,800) is quieter, more accurate, multi-shot and regulated, and needs a fill source (hand pump, dive bottle or compressor). FX, Diana, Norica and Stoeger are on the shelf at Roseville Chase today.

First air rifle? Tell us the range and the pest and we will match the power, calibre and scope. PCP buyers: ask about fill options before you leave; a 300-bar bottle or compressor is part of the budget.

      Common questions

Do you need a licence for an air rifle in Australia?
Yes, in every state and territory. In NSW an air rifle is a Category A firearm: you need a firearms licence, a Permit to Acquire and it is registered and stored like a rimfire rifle. Air pistols are Category H and require pistol club membership. The rules are similar in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory.
What is the best air rifle for rabbits and pest control?
For rabbits and pigeons to about 40 metres, a .22 spring or gas-ram rifle such as the Diana 260 or Norica Dragon ($385 to $410) is plenty. For volume pest work, longer ranges and quiet shooting, a .22 or .25 PCP such as the FX DRS ($1,609) or FX Impact ($3,758 up) is the tool; the trade-off is the cost of a fill bottle or compressor.
What is the difference between a PCP and a spring air rifle?
A spring or gas-ram rifle stores energy in a spring or gas strut you cock for each shot; it is cheap, self-contained and a little hold-sensitive. A pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) holds compressed air at up to 300 bar in an onboard cylinder, giving many regulated, recoil-free shots per fill with far better accuracy, but you need a hand pump, dive bottle or compressor to refill it.
How much does an air rifle cost in Australia?
At Magnum Sports spring and gas-ram air rifles start at $337, scope combos at $359, mid-range PCPs at $1,609 and top-end FX Impact, King and Panthera models run $3,250 to $6,759. Budget $300 to $700 for a fill bottle or hand pump with a PCP.
Can I buy an air rifle online and have it delivered?
Yes, with a licence and Permit to Acquire, dealer-to-dealer like any firearm: collect from Roseville Chase or nominate a licensed dealer near you for the transfer. Air rifle pellets ship Australia-wide with your licence sighted.
