Buying Gun Cleaning & Maintenance in Australia

Magnum Sports carries about 400 gun cleaning and maintenance lines with around 240 available today: complete kits, one-piece coated rods, bore brushes and jags in every calibre, patches, bore snakes, solvents, copper removers, oils, greases and stock and metal treatments. Pro-Shot (90 lines), Breakthrough Clean (67), Hoppe's (64), Dewey Rods (52) and Kleen-Bore (49) are the core ranges, with Tipton, Birchwood Casey, Outers, Bore Tech, Tetra Gun, VFG and Ballistol alongside.

A quarter of the range is under $15, half is under $32 and complete rod-and-vise kits run to about $400. Cleaning gear needs no licence and ships Australia-wide for a flat $20 (free over $700), though aerosol solvents go by road rather than air.

A sound basic kit for a centrefire rifle is a Dewey or Pro-Shot one-piece coated rod in the right calibre, a bore guide, a nylon brush, a jag and patches, a copper solvent such as Breakthrough or Hoppe's Elite, a light oil for the bolt and a stock or metal cloth. Clean the bore after every trip, oil lightly, and store the rifle muzzle-down or horizontal in the safe.

      Common questions

How often should I clean my rifle?
Clean the bore after every outing where you fired more than a few shots, and always after a wet day. Wipe the bolt and exterior with a lightly oiled cloth before it goes into the safe. Rimfires and shotguns tolerate longer intervals; centrefire barrels shoot most consistently when copper is removed every 50 to 100 rounds.
What cleaning kit do I need for a .22 rifle?
A .22 calibre one-piece rod or bore snake, a nylon brush and jag, patches and a general-purpose solvent and oil. Kleen-Bore and Pro-Shot rimfire kits include everything for under $50.
Which is the best gun cleaning solvent?
For copper fouling in centrefire rifles, Breakthrough Clean, Hoppe's Elite Copper, Bore Tech Eliminator and Pro-Shot Copper Solvent are the most popular with our customers. For general carbon and powder fouling Hoppe's No. 9 remains the standard. Use a bore guide and a coated rod to protect the throat.
Can gun cleaning products be posted in Australia?
Yes. Liquid solvents and oils ship by road freight anywhere in Australia; aerosol cans cannot go by air, so express delivery is not available on those items. Everything else ships for a flat $20, free over $700.
