Most rifles are cleaned too often and too roughly. The damage comes from the rod, not the dirt — a steel rod dragged through a bore without a guide wears the throat and the crown, which are the two parts that actually set your accuracy. Buy a bore guide and a coated rod before you buy anything else.

Know which solvent you are using and why. Carbon solvent handles ordinary fouling from powder. Copper solvent strips jacket fouling and should not be left sitting in a bore indefinitely. Rimfires are the exception to most of this: they foul with lead and wax rather than copper, barrels last a very long time, and the part that genuinely needs attention is the bolt face, where priming residue builds a hard ring and causes misfires.

Always clean breech to muzzle where the action allows it, and never let a rod touch the crown. Everything here is available for collection or delivery from Roseville Chase — no licence needed for cleaning gear.
