The Hornady .172" bullet comparator insert is the calibre-specific insert for the Lock-N-Load bullet comparator, for handloaders who measure loaded rounds and bullets from the ogive rather than the tip in .172" calibres.

Measuring across bullet tips is unreliable; tips vary by as much as .025" from one round to the next. The comparator clamps to a caliper blade, the insert bears on the bullet ogive, and the result is a repeatable base-to-ogive reading you can use to set seating depth, check bullet uniformity and read a modified-case OAL gauge measurement. Inserts are interchangeable in the same body; this one is for .172" bullets.
