Handloaders in .224" calibres fit this Hornady insert to the Lock-N-Load comparator body so cartridge length is measured at the bullet ogive, the point that actually meets the rifling.

Measuring across bullet tips is unreliable; tips vary by as much as .025" from one round to the next. The comparator clamps to a caliper blade, the insert bears on the bullet ogive, and the result is a repeatable base-to-ogive reading you can use to set seating depth, check bullet uniformity and read a modified-case OAL gauge measurement. Inserts are interchangeable in the same body; this one is for .224" bullets.
