Hornady universal shell holder #40 is the snap-in holder that grips a case by its rim in a single-stage press, and the number is what matters: it must match the rim of the cartridge you load. One holder generally covers every cartridge that shares that rim size.

Hornady machines its shell holders from solid steel and heat-treats them, with a wide mouth and rounded edge at the opening so cases slide in without catching.
