Buying Pump Action Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists the pump-action rifles sold in Australia: the Arttech Prima XP in Synthetic, Camo and Blaze and as scope packages, the Henry Pump Action .22 LR, the Uberti 1884 pump-action rifle and carbine, and pre-owned Remington 7600 (.270 Win) and 7615 (.223 Rem) rifles on consignment. Straight-pull rifles such as the Southern Cross Taipan and Arttech Prima SP are listed separately under the same licence rules.

Since the 2026 NSW reforms pump-action rifles, straight-pull rifles and lever-release rifles are Category C firearms, alongside pump-action shotguns. A Category C licence in NSW is limited to primary producers and their employees and a few approved occupational reasons, so these rifles are no longer available to recreational hunters or club shooters on a Category A or B licence. Existing owners should check the NSW Police guidance on the transition and buyback, which starts on 2 November 2026.

      Are pump-action rifles legal in NSW?
      Yes, but since the 2026 NSW reforms they are Category C firearms, the same category as pump-action shotguns.       What is the difference between a pump-action and a straight-pull rifle?
      A pump action cycles with the fore-end, like a pump shotgun; a straight-pull cycles with a bolt handle pulled straight back and pushed forward without lifting. Both are faster than a turn-bolt and both are now Category C in NSW. The Southern Cross Taipan and Arttech Prima SP are straight-pulls; the Remington 7600 and 7615, Arttech Prima XP and Henry Pump are pump actions.
