Shot size does most of the work. For trap and skeet, 7.5 and 8 shot in a light target load keeps recoil manageable across a long card. Sporting clays often wants 7.5 for the longer presentations. In the field, 6 and 7.5 suit quail and rabbit, while 4 and larger cover ducks and bigger game where legal.
