A hollow point boat tail for the 7mm-08, 7x57 and 7mm magnums, the 180 grain Sierra MatchKing #1980 is aimed at the target shooter and reloader who wants repeatable groups rather than a hunting bullet. Sierra developed the 180 grain #1980 at the request of top F-Class shooters; its 12-calibre secant ogive and lengthened boat tail make it a serious long-range choice for the 7mm magnums and 284 Win.

MatchKing jackets are drawn thin and held to very tight concentricity, with a small hollow point meplat that keeps weight and balance consistent from bullet to bullet. Sierra specifies a barrel twist of 1:8 in or faster for this bullet. They are a target design: Sierra does not recommend MatchKings for most hunting, and on varmints they will not open as reliably as the lighter-jacketed VarmintKing and BlitzKing bullets.
