The Sierra 8900 is a 300 grain 45-70 calibre (.458) Pro-Hunter hollow point flat nose, a flat-base hunting bullet for the 45-70 Govt. The 300 grain #8900 is a .458 flat nose made specifically for the 45-70; it expands at original 1873 Springfield velocities and at the full loads possible in Ruger No. 1 and Marlin lever actions, and it must not be used in .451 or .454 handguns.

Pro-Hunter bullets use a flat base and Sierra's double-tapered jacket for controlled expansion and deep penetration on medium and heavy game at short to medium range, and their short length for weight helps accuracy and stability. The blunt nose keeps this bullet safe in tubular magazines and lets a barrel stabilise a heavier bullet than a spitzer of the same weight. Sierra introduced this bullet in 1973.
