Buying Pump Action Shotguns in Australia

Magnum Sports lists the pump-action shotguns sold in Australia for Category C licence holders: the Remington 870 Fieldmaster and 870 Tactical in wood and synthetic, the Mossberg 500 Hunting, Flex and ATI Tactical, the Mossberg 590 Thunder Ranch and M500 Retrograde, the Benelli SuperNova, the Pointer WS500 and pre-owned pump guns such as the Browning BPS on consignment. All are 12 gauge with a five-round capacity for Australian compliance.

A pump-action shotgun is a Category C firearm everywhere in Australia. In NSW a Category C licence is limited to primary producers and their employees for pest control on rural land, and to a few other approved occupational reasons; recreational hunters and clay target shooters cannot hold one. Under the 2026 NSW reforms pump-action, straight-pull and lever-release shotguns all sit in Category C, so a Category A or B holder wanting a repeating shotgun should look at our lever-action shotguns instead.

      Both are proven farm guns. The 870 ($1,459 up) has a steel receiver, a smoother action and the wider aftermarket; the Mossberg 500 ($824 up) is lighter with an aluminium receiver, a tang safety that suits left-handers and a lower price.
