The .270 Winchester has been a benchmark deer cartridge since 1925, when Winchester necked the .30-06 case down to .277 calibre. A 130 grain projectile at 3,050 fps shoots flatter than a .308 and hits harder at range, and the 140 to 150 grain loads bring the weight for larger game. It needs a long action, which is the one thing that keeps it from the short-action crowd.
In Australia it is a proven fallow, red and sambar cartridge, with the flat trajectory earning its keep on open-country goats and deer where shots stretch past 250 metres. Recoil is moderate, a touch sharper than a .308, and it remains one of the most common calibres in the gun safe of hunters who bought one rifle decades ago and never needed another.
Factory ammunition is everywhere and reasonably priced. As a reloading cartridge it is well documented, though the range of .277 match projectiles is narrow compared with .264 or .308, so it is rarely a target choice. Do not confuse it with the 6.8 Western or .270 WSM, which use the same projectile in different cases.
We stock .270 Winchester rifles from Tikka, Sako and other leading brands, hold hunting ammunition in depth, and carry dies, brass and projectiles for reloaders. Firearms are shipped Australia-wide to your nominated dealer.
