About the .45 ACP

The .45 ACP was designed by John Browning in 1904 for the Colt 1911 and served the United States military for 74 years. A 230 grain projectile at around 850 fps delivers a slow, heavy push rather than a snap, and the cartridge has a well-earned reputation for accuracy in a good 1911.

In Australia its .452 calibre exceeds the .38 calibre limit on general sport pistol licences in most states, so it is available only to Category H shooters with an approved-discipline endorsement, most commonly IPSC, Metallic Silhouette or Single Action. It is the traditional choice for IPSC Classic and Standard division shooters who want to make major power factor with a 1911 or 2011 platform. Confirm your state's requirements and club approvals before ordering.

Ammunition is dearer than 9mm and most competitors reload; the large, low-pressure case is easy on brass and forgiving with cast or coated projectiles. Do not confuse it with .45 Colt, the longer rimmed revolver cartridge, or .45 GAP.

We stock .45 ACP competition pistols from leading brands, hold practice and match ammunition, and carry dies, brass, projectiles and magazines. Handguns are shipped Australia-wide to your nominated dealer, subject to licence endorsement.
