The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed by Hornady in 2007 as a purpose-built long-range target cartridge, and in less than two decades it has become the fastest-growing centrefire in Australia. It fits a short action, uses the same bolt face as .308 Winchester, and drives long, high ballistic coefficient 6.5 mm projectiles that hold velocity and resist wind far better than a .308 at the same recoil level or less.
For hunters it is a genuine deer cartridge. A 140 to 143 grain bonded or monolithic projectile at 2,650 to 2,750 fps takes fallow, red and sambar cleanly at practical ranges, and the mild recoil makes it a favourite with newer shooters, lighter-framed hunters and anyone who wants to shoot a lot without flinching. It suits pigs and goats equally well.
On the range it dominates PRS and practical precision matches, is competitive in F-Class Open and club long-range, and reaches 1,000 metres with less drop and drift than almost anything else in a factory short action. Match ammunition from Hornady, Sako, Federal and others is widely available, and reloaders get long barrel life relative to the hotter 6.5 mm magnums.
Do not confuse it with 6.5x55 Swedish, .260 Remington or 6.5 PRC. They share the .264 bullet but none of them interchange. If you are unsure what your rifle is chambered in, check the barrel marking or bring it in.
We stock 6.5 Creedmoor rifles from Tikka, Sako, Cadex and other leading brands, hold hunting and match ammunition in depth, and carry dies, brass and projectiles for reloaders. Firearms are shipped Australia-wide to your nominated dealer.
