Yes. In NSW an air rifle is a Category A firearm, so you need a Category A licence and a Permit to Acquire for each one, plus a passed safe-storage inspection since 1 July 2026. It must be stored in an approved locked receptacle.
What is the best air rifle for pest control?
A .22 or .25 PCP such as the FX Impact, FX King, BSA Merlin or RTI P-3 gives the power and accuracy for rabbits and feral birds out to 60 metres. For close work a .22 gas-ram Diana or Norica at $400 to $600 is enough.
