For short-barrelled rifles and handguns where a reliably expanding, low-flash load is wanted, Hornady's Critical Defense line offers this 22 WMR (handgun) load carrying a 45 gr FTX. Hornady rates it at 1,000 ft/s from its test barrel with a G1 ballistic coefficient of .110.

Critical Defense is loaded with the FTX bullet, whose patented Flex Tip helps it expand reliably and stops the hollow point clogging when it passes through heavy clothing. Propellants are chosen to burn quickly, which limits recoil and muzzle flash so night vision is not disrupted, and every round uses nickel-plated cases and sealed primers for dependable ignition.
